Obituary for David L. Young

David L. Young, 87, of Indiana, died March 17, 2017 at Beacon Ridge Nursing Home.

He was born in Youngstown, Ohio in 1929. He attended public school there and in Canton, Ohio, where he moved with his parents, Norman and Leona Young. Subsequently he received a B.A. from Kent State with dual majors in philosophy and English. Upon graduation in 1951 he entered the Army and after his discharge he returned to school, receiving a M.A. at Kent and Ph.D. at Ohio State University, both degrees in English. He began teaching English at IUP in 1968. One of his proudest accomplishments was working with other English faculty to save Sutton Hall, which was scheduled for demolition.

In 1961, his wife, Beverly -whom he married in 1955- suggested buying a camera, an event which would change his life. He became an avid photographer with a number of exhibits in Ohio and Pennsylvania. In 1978 he was invited to join the Communications Department to teach photography, a position he held until his retirement in 1989.

His work is found in museums and private collections throughout the area.
He was a member of the Indiana Art Association and was under contract with The Artists Hand, where he exhibited.

David is survived by his wife Beverly.

There will be no funeral services. Friends will be invited to the celebration of his life in May.

Cremation arrangements are with the Rairigh-Bence Funeral Home of Indiana.
