Obituary for Gregory David Bivens

Gregory (Greg) David Bivens of Delmont, Pennsylvania passed away unexpectedly on November 17th, 2023 at the age of 62. He was born November 20th, 1960 in Chambersburg, PA to the late Carl C. Bivens and Geraldine L. “Geri” (Kanavage) Mitchell.

Greg graduated from Greencastle High School in 1978, where he sang in the school choir and played football and baseball.

Greg attended the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, where he worked as a radio host and DJ, and graduated in 1982 with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. Greg then earned two graduate degrees, the first a Master of Arts in Geography from Bowling Green State University in 1983, followed by a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1987.

After completing his education, Greg worked in Insurance Benefits for twenty-eight years in both Pittsburgh and Indiana, Pennsylvania. Greg was exceptionally hard working, an inspirational home cook, a coach for his children’s sports teams, a cigar aficionado, and a lifelong fan of golf, the Minnesota Vikings, and the Baltimore Orioles. Greg was a member of Mother of Sorrows Roman Catholic Parish in Murrysville, PA and had previously served as Grand Knight for the Knights of Columbus Council 1481 as a member of St. Bernard of Clairvaux in Indiana, PA.

He was preceded in death by his father, Carl C. Bivens; step-mother Yvonne B. Bivens; step-father William H. Mitchell; and brother-in-law Robert W. Ernharth; all of Greencastle, PA. Survivors include his mother, Geraldine L. “Geri” (Kanavage) Mitchell of Greencastle, PA; sister Lisa (Bivens) Ernharth of Greencastle, PA; son and daughter-in-law David Bivens and Stephanie (White) Bivens of Atlanta, GA; daughter and son-in-law Amanda (Bivens) Connors and Derek Connors of Erie, PA, and son and daughter-in-law Steven Bivens and Stefani Buck-Bivens of Mount Laurel, NJ.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family. Rairigh-Bence Funeral Home & Crematory, in Indiana, PA, is handling the arrangements. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Westmoreland Food Bank, where Greg volunteered:
