Obituary for Helen Edwards (Erickson)

Helen (Erickson) Edwards, 77 of Indiana, unexpectedly died Friday, October 5, 2023 at the Indiana Regional Medical Center. Born in Indiana on May 21, 1946, she was the daughter of the late John Erickson and Frances (Widdowson) Erickson. She was also the widow of Charles “Lee” Edwards who died December 13, 2019. They were married nearly 53 years.

She had a beautiful smile, a wonderful personality, a positive attitude that was infectious and an empowering drive to live and overcome life’s obstacles. She was a resilient woman.

A graduate of Indiana High School and of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Helen earned both bachelors and masters degrees in education. She enjoyed a 35 year career as a kindergarten teacher in the Indiana Area School District, retiring in 2005.

Helen never seemed to meet a stranger. She could hold a conversation with just about anyone, anywhere at any time. She had a way about her that made people feel important, which was a gift she shared with those who knew her best. She took her work as a school teacher very seriously. Helen was proud of her students and enjoyed meeting them later in life and watching their success in the community.

She is also remembered as a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother who was quite proud of her grandchildren and their accomplishments.

Helen was a longtime member of the Calvary Presbyterian Church in Indiana where she had been active with many church functions and activities.

Helen is remembered by her children: Dr. Timothy Edwards (Amy), Dublin, OH and Jennifer Bianco (Tom), Indiana. Her grandchildren are: Claire, Ally and Lilly Edwards and Ben, Simon, Caroline and Natalie Bianco. She is also survived by her brothers: Howard Erickson (Catherine), Maryland and Richard Erickson (Brenda), Georgia.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, John Erickson who died before she was born.

Friends will be received Friday, October 13th, from 5:00 until 7:00 PM at the Rairigh-Bence Funeral Home & Crematory of Indiana. A visitation will begin Saturday at 1:00 PM at the Calvary Presbyterian Church in Indiana, her funeral service will begin at 2:00 PM. Rev. David Hanna officiating. Interment will follow at the Oakland Cemetery, Indiana.
