Dr. John Joseph Choby, 86, of Indiana and formerly of Doylestown, passed away Friday, January 12, 2024 at St. Andrews Village. Born October 12, 1936 in Johnstown, he was a son of the late Dr. Joseph and Mary (Balog) Choby.

Dr. Choby graduated from Johnstown High School and received his Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Notre Dame. His graduate and clinical work was completed at the College of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Pennsylvania. He interned at Parkland Memorial Hospital, Dallas, TX and became a clinical instructor at Georgetown University School of Medicine.

He served in the U.S. Army, based in Columbia, SC.

Dr. Choby became a partner in the Doylestown Women’s Health Center, was president of the Doylestown Hospital Medical Staff and was awarded the Members of Honorary Medical Staff for his 30 years of dedication.
Following his retirement, he donated his time and effort to the Doylestown Hospital Free Clinic.

Dr. Choby was a devoted member and served as a eucharistic minister at the Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Doylestown and later became a member of St. Bernard of Clairvaux Catholic Church of Indiana.
He was an avid golfer and member of the Doylestown Country Club and Fiddlesticks Country Club, Fort Myers, FL. He enjoyed traveling, photography, solving crossword puzzles, collecting art work and spending time with his family and friends.

His surviving family includes his devoted wife of 32 years, Patricia Hewitt Choby of Indiana and the following children: Tara Snyder (Jon); Moira Whalen (John) and Christopher Choby (Amanda). Other surviving family members include: 9 grandchildren and his step-children: Earl Hewitt IV (Susan); James Hewitt; Jessica Hewitt Walsh (Dr. Richard Walsh); 4 step-grandchildren and 3 step great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers: Dr. George and Robert Choby and also by the mother of his children, Suzanne Quinn Choby.

Dr. Choby will be remembered for his compassion, optimism, quiet inspiration and dedication to his family, friends and patients.

Knowing that he wished to be a physician at an early age, he approached medicine with altruism. As his father did, so did John, he never charged a widow for patient services.

The family wishes to thank the staff at the Fountains, The Communities at Indian Haven and most recently, St. Andrew’s Village, for the love and care they extended to John during his difficult times.

Visitation is Saturday, January 20th from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at St. Bernard of Clairvaux Church, Indiana, where Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at eleven o’clock with Rev. Paul Dressler, O.F.M. Cap. Burial with military honors will follow at Oakland Cemetery.
