Obituary for Dalvin Jay Smith

Dalvin Jay  Smith
Dalvin J. Smith, 85, of Green Township, died Friday, April 1, 2016 at Forbes Regional Hospital, Monroeville. He was the husband of Ethel May (Clapper) Smith, whom he married on February 20, 1954.

Born, November 8, 1930, in Vandergrift, he was the third child of Stephen H. and Sarah Jane (Stiles) Smith.
He attended his first three years of school in Vandergrift and when his family moved to Allegheny Township, he attended school there until the high school was closed. He finished his last three years of high school at Freeport, graduating in 1948. He enlisted in the Navy on July 1, 1948 and served until June 3, 1952. He attained the rank of First Class Petty Officer Electronic Technician. He attended college, part-time for one year, while working full-time. He then worked as a Field Service Technician for Union Switch and Signal on the F-86D flight simulator, with one year at Andrews Air Force Base and then three years at Stewart Air Force Base. He requested to be transferred to the factory in Swissvale. He was terminated in about three months, but was hired by another subsidiary of Westinghouse, called Melpar, in Falls Church, Virginia. He worked there from 1957 to 1967 and requested to be transferred back to Swissvale. After American Standard took over in 1969, he was terminated in August 1970. He was then hired by Siemans Analytical X-ray Division and worked for them until he retired on December 31, 1995. He was asked to work two more years, but agreed to work one year, on-call. He finished December 31, 1996.

He was a member of the Kenwood Church of the Nazarene.

Dalvin is survived by his wife, Ethel, and four children: Dawn Alane McCleery, of Delaware, Ohio; Brian W. Smith of Black Mountain, NC; Valerie Gayle Downey, of Albia, IA; and, Cynthia Renee Delmanto, of Monroeville. He also has five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He had an older brother, who died as a baby and an older sister Dorothy, who died in 1980. One younger brother, Ernest, passed away in 2015. He has one surviving brother, Stanley and a younger sister, Mary Ellen (Smith) Emerick.

Friends will be received on Monday, April 4, 2016 from 2-4 and 6-8PM at the Rairigh-Bence Funeral Home of Indiana. His funeral service will be held Tuesday, April 5th at 10AM at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Pineland Cemetery, Strongstown.
