Obituary for Eugene "Gene" McGeary

Victor Eugene “Gene” McGeary, 88, of Indiana, PA, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Saturday, July 25, 2015, at St. Andrew’s Village.

He was the husband of Ruth (Chiodo) McGeary, married December 1, 1945. They spent 69 happily married years together.

Eugene was born June 21, 1927, in White Township, Indiana County to the late Emery and Delta (Davis) McGeary. He proudly served in the United States Navy at the end of World War II as a gunner on the U.S.S. Fargo. After his service, Eugene worked at FMC, until his retirement in 1989. His greatest enjoyment after retirement was spending time with his loving family—telling stories, giving advice, having a good time at all of the many celebrations, family gatherings, and events. Eugene was a member of St. Bernard of Clairvaux Roman Catholic Church.

Surviving are his wife, his son James McGeary and daughter-in-law Pamela (Marafka) of Indiana, granddaughter Kelly (McGeary) Brightbill and grandson-in-law Andrew “AJ” of Annville, and grandsons Bryan McGeary of Pittsburgh and Michael McGeary of Indiana, all of whom filled him with great pride and put a smile on his face. He was also a delighted great-grand-“paw” to Cara, Lela, Jack, Sting, Maggie May, and Layla.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister LaVerne, brothers William and Donald; half-brothers Blair, Jake, Miller, Mack, Earl, Dean, and Ivan; and half-sisters Gaile, Emaline, Marian, Violet, and Mildred.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, July 28 from 2-4 and 6-8 at Rairigh-Bence Funeral Home of Indiana. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Bernard of Clairvaux Roman Catholic Church on Wednesday, July 29 at 10 AM. Entombment will be at the St. Bernard Mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or to the charity of one’s choice.

The family would like to thank Dr. Joseph Ambrose and the staffs of IRMC and St. Andrew’s Village for their special care and support, along with his extended family, friends, and the many people who wished him all the best.
