Obituary for George Petro

George Petro, 86, of Clymer, PA., passed away on Monday, March 17, 2014 at Indiana Regional Medical Center.

Born on April 13, 1927 in Watkins, PA, George was the son of Alex and Mary (Senchisin) Petro.

George was a member of St. Michael Orthodox Greek Catholic Church of Clymer, where he served as an usher and could be seen maintaining the lawn for many years. He was a member of the Clymer Slovak Club as well as the Clymer American Legion, Post 222, following his service in the United States Navy during World War II.

George is also fondly remembered by those he coached in Clymer’s Little League program. A man of numerous talents and abilities, he worked in a factory in Cleveland, OH, drove a van for Penns Manor School District and continued enjoying gardening and hunting following his retirement after a second stretch as a coalminer.

A loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather, George was a gentle giant to all that knew him.

He is survived by one daughter-in-law, Janet Petro of Clymer; three grandchildren, Chance J. Petro and wife Melissa of Wexford, PA; Janessa P. Hardesty and husband John, Jr. of Clymer, PA; George T. Petro of Clymer, PA; four great- grandchildren, J.D. and Caden Petro and Jackson and Marley Hardesty; two brothers, Alex Petro of Dixonville, Frank Petro of Clymer, one sister, Mary Petro of Clymer and many nieces and nephews.
George was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Helen M. (Pennington) Petro in 2007; his son, John Michael Petro in 2002; two sisters, Josephine and Irene Petro and three brothers, Wasko, Michael and John Petro.

Family and friends will be received on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Rairigh-Bence Funeral Home, Clymer. Following the viewing there will be a memorial service. His funeral service will be celebrated on Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Michael Orthodox Greek Catholic Church, Clymer. Interment will be in the Church Cemetery, Clymer.

His family requests that memorial contributions be made to St. Michael’s Cemetery Fund, 465 Morris St., Clymer, PA 15728.
