Obituary for Jennie Benko

Jennie M. (Abate) Benko, 89, died Thursday, August 11, 2016, at her home in Starford. Born March 29, 1927 in Alverda, she was a daughter of James and Frances (Guerreso) Abate. She married Joseph Benko on August 28, 1948 and they would have celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary later this month.
She graduated from Pine Township High School and worked as a seamstress for Indiana Hospital for more than 20 years.

Jennie was one of the original Christian Mothers of the former St. Elizabeth’s Parish, in Starford. She was well-known as the “pie lady” who baked all of the pies served at the former “Rice’s Café” in Purchase Line. She liked dancing, particularly waltzing, and big band music. She loved her family and especially loved watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was a member of Church of the Resurrection, Clymer.

Jennie is survived by her husband Joe, and by her children Barbara Rice and husband Tim of Commodore and Kathy Ellis, of Clymer. The following siblings also survive her: Ida Tomechko (Albert), Michael Abate, and Philip Abate (Sande), all of Ohio. Her grandchildren are: Tim Rice (Sherry), Tom Rice, Tammy Stiles (Jerry), Nancy Mikos (John) and Christine Knapik (Kevin). Her great-grandchildren are Joey and Jenna Rice, Johnnie and Brandon Mikos, and Hunter and Carter Knapik. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Alveda Lantzy and her husband George, brother Victor Abate and sister-in-law, Theresa Abate.

Friends will be received Sunday, August 14th from 4-8PM at the Rairigh-Bence Funeral Home, of Clymer. An additional viewing hour will be held on Monday morning from 10:30-11:30 at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, August 15th at noon at the Church of the Resurrection, Clymer, Father Anthony Klimko, Celebrant. Interment will be in St. Elizabeth Cemetery, Starford.
