Obituary for John G. Knapik

John G.  Knapik
John Gerald Knapik, 63 of Commodore, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at his home. He was born November 5, 1950 in Indiana, the son of John Knapik of Commodore and the late Sophia (Hritz) Knapik. He was the husband of Susan (LaMagna) Knapik, his wife of forty-one years whom he married February 10, 1973.

John was a 1970 graduate of Purchase Line High School. He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America and was previously employed at the Homer City coal cleaning plant. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed four wheeling and was a dedicated fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers. He especially loved and treasured the time he spent with his family.

In addition to his father and wife, John is survived by his sons: John J. Knapik & wife, Joy, Indiana; and Joshua A. Knapik, Commodore. His grandson is Antonio Knapik, Indiana. John’s siblings are: George Knapik, Nanty Glo; Andrea Nichol, Indiana and Cynthia Skalican & husband, Mark, Commodore. He was also loved by his brother and sister in-laws: Sandra Katchmer & husband, Michael, Northern Cambria; Michael LaMagna & wife, Debbie, Hollidaysburg; Ralph LaMagna, Jr., Northern Cambria; Sr. Linda LaMagna CCW, Altoona; Samuel LaMagna & wife, Melissa, Patton; and Mary Ann Watson & fiancé, Ronnie Stanley, Bealeton,VA.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Sophia and by his mother and father-in-laws, Ralph and Mary LaMagna.

Family and friends will be received from 6 – 9 PM Thursday at the Rairigh-Bence Funeral Home of Indiana. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday afternoon at 1:30 PM at St. Bernard of Clairvaux Church in Indiana. Interment will be at a later date at the convenience of the family at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cemetery, Northern Cambria.

John had benefited from several organ transplants during his lifetime. In turn, John is now an organ donor with CORE, the Center For Organ Recovery & Education, hoping to help the lives of others.
