Obituary for Joseph Gabster

Joseph Gabster, 87, of Indiana died February 10, 2015 at Walnut Ridge Memory Care Center in Greensburg, PA.

The son of John and Anna (Michna) Gabster, he was born April 26, 1927 in Center Township. Joe was raised in Ernest and lived his entire life in Indiana County. He was a 1945 graduate of Indiana High School. After graduation, he joined the US Navy and served as an Aerographers Mate 3/C.

Joe was a member of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux Catholic Church in Indiana where he served over 35 years as an usher. In addition, he was a Life member of VFW Post 1989. Joe had a great respect for the environment and was a member/director of the former Indiana Sportman's Club. He was an avid hunter, trapper and fisherman who enjoyed time in the outdoors with his sons.

Joe was employed for 36 years with R&P Coal Company. At retirement, he was a foreman at the Maintenance Training Center in Indiana.

Surviving are his three sons, James J and wife Nancy of Mount Laurel, NJ; Jeffrey C. and wife Alicia of Delmont, PA; Jon P. and wife Kristin of Oakdale, PA plus eight grandchildren: Steven, Elizabeth, Laura, Joseph A., Joshua, Sean, Rylee and Tyler. Also surviving are his sister, Kathryn Kopchick and two nephews.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 62 years, Patricia (Airgood) Gabster; his stepmother Alice (Cramer) Gabster and two stepbrothers.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 pm on Friday, February 13th at Rairigh-Bence Funeral Home in Indiana. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am Saturday the 14th at Saint Bernard of Clairvaux Church. Interment will be in the church cemetery with military honors.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimers Association or to Saint Bernards of Clairvaux Church.
