Obituary for Mike Sibo Jr.

Mike Sibo Jr.

Mike Sibo, a long-time member of St. Bernard’s Parish, died on December 12 in Indiana. At his side were his wife, Madelyn, his partner of 67 years, as well as family and friends. He was 95.

Mike was born in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, on June 25, 1919, the son of Mike and Annie Sibo. The family, which included two brothers and a sister, first relocated to Ohio, where his father worked in the steel industry, and then eventually to the coal-mining towns of West Virginia. When Mike Sibo was 16, he jumped a train for New Orleans to make his way in the world. Initially working in the oil industry for eight years, he then moved to Pennsylvania and began working as a heavy equipment operator for various coal-mining companies until 1965. Starting in that year, he worked as the caretaker at St. Bernard’s Cemetery until 1985. Mike was a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus at St. Bernard’s and was very active in other parish activities.
While working for a coal company near Brockway, Mike met his future wife, Madelyn Orlosky. They married on Nov. 29, 1947, and moved to Indiana. Mike Sibo found love and joy in his faith, family, and many friends. He was kind-hearted and generous and touched many lives with his good deeds. His children consider him the most honest man they have ever known.

He is survived by his wife, Madelyn; five children, including Barbara (John) Mayes of Oak Park, Illinois; Michael Sibo of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Daniel (Kathleen) Sibo of Laingsburg, Michigan; Margaret (Steven) Price of Midlothian, Virginia; and Amy Sibo of Annapolis, Maryland. He had nine grandchildren: Elizabeth and Carter Mayes; Robert (Selcen) Sibo; Michael (Jennifer) Sibo; Stephen, Justin, and Christian Sibo; Emily Price; and David Sibo. He also had four great-grandchildren: Sophia, Jillian, and Chloe Sibo and Tiffany Benson-Sibo. He will be missed.

Friends will be received Wednesday, December 17th from 2 – 4 & 7 – 9 PM at the Rairigh-Bence Funeral Home of Indiana. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday morning at 10 AM at St. Bernard of Clairvaux Church, Indiana. Final internment will be at Saint Bernard Cemetery.
