Obituary for Richard L. Davis

Richard Lee Davis, 91, of Indiana passed away peacefully on Thursday, Oct. 8, 2015, following a lengthy illness.

A son of Frank and Agnes (Lynch) Davis, Rich was born July 3, 1924, in New Florence. He graduated in 1942 and worked for a time as a welder. But with the onset of World War II, he received his greetings from Uncle Sam and joined the Army. He chose the 6th Ranger Battalion and proudly served in the South Pacific. After the war, he returned to marry his high school sweetheart, Mary Jane Walker, on Nov. 13, 1947. Together they had four daughters: Shirley (Jerry) Ray, of Shelocta; Kathy Brewer, of Indiana; Karen (Patrick) McGuire, of Shelocta; and Tammy Davis, at home.

They moved to Indiana in 1952 into the house that is still their home. Rich worked as a mechanic with Penelec for 31 years. After retirement, he enjoyed driving cars for McGregor Motors and spending many hours at his favorite pole barn tinkering with his ‘toys’ – an Allis-Chalmers crawler, a John Deere loader, a Cat R5 dozer and an IH dump truck. Above all, he was always available to help his family.

Rich was a member of the Shelocta Community Presbyterian Church and Indiana Masonic Lodge #313.

In addition to his wife and daughters, Rich is survived by his sister, H. Jean Hill, of Freeport, Ill.; three grandchildren: Katie (Leczner) Rescenete, Adam Leczner and Scott Jennings; and four great-grandsons: Casey and Connor Jennings, and Landon and Logan Rescenete.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, James H. Davis; his brothers-in- law, Victor Hill and Arthur James; a sister-in-law, Helen (Shorty) (Walker) James; and a son-in-law, Ronald Eugene Brewer.

The family would like to thank VNA Hospice and Extended Home Care for their compassionate care and support.

In keeping with Rich’s wishes, there will be no visitation or service. Rairigh Bence Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to Indiana County Humane Society or the Shelocta Community Presbyterian Church.
