Obituary for Walter Eugene Witmer

Walter Eugene Witmer, 65 of Pioneer Lake Road, Cherry Tree and formerly of Black Lick, died Saturday, July 6, 2013 at the V.A. Hospital in Pittsburgh. Born December 18, 1947 in Indiana, he was a son of the late Harry D. Witmer and Ellen M. (Tirney) Witmer.
He had attended school in the Blairsville School District and worked as a general contractor for much of his adult life.
Walter was a Vietnam Veteran having served as a Private First Class in the U.S. Army. He was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in battle. He also received the Combat Infantry Badge and the Army Commendation Medal and a Bronze Star.
He enjoyed firing his rifles and was an expert marksman. Walter also liked to fish, take care of his yard work, put puzzles together, tend to his cars and play with his many nieces and nephews.
He is survived by his siblings: Vicky Smuckers & husband, Thomas, Venus, PA; Sandy Steffey & husband, Melvin, Homer City; Robert Witmer & wife, Edna, Cherry Tree; Donna Shirley & companion Bill, Black Lick; Kathy Witmer, Homer City; Benjamin Witmer, Black Lick; Estelle Smith, Natrona Heights; and Richard Witmer, Natrona Heights. In addition to his nieces and nephews, Walter is survived by his cat, Jovonie and his dog, Princess.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers: Richard and Harry Witmer.
Visitation will be Wednesday, July 10th from noon until 2 P.M. at the Rairigh-Bence Funeral Home of Indiana. Pastor Albert Brown will conduct the funeral service at two o’clock Wednesday afternoon following the visitation hours at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will be in the Union Cemetery, Parkwood.
Walter’s family would like to thank the Visiting Nurses Association for all their loving care.
