Obituary for Michael P. Guba Jr.

Michael P. Guba Jr., 88 of Indiana, PA. (formerly of Cape Cod, MA), passed away on Thursday, November 21, 2013 at St. Andrew’s Village.

He was the son of Michael P. and Victoria (Pudney) Guba Sr., born on August, 25, 1925 in Utica, NY.

Michael was a veteran and a Commander in U.S. Navy. He served 22 years in active and reserve duty during WW II, the Korean conflict and the Viet Nam war. He received his engineering degree through the Navy and was an alumnus of Villanova University. Michael served on various ships during his duty while circumnavigating the globe but most importantly on the destroyer, U.S.S. Rush during the Korean Conflict. It was during his time of duty overseeing the later conversion of this ship in the Boston Ship Yard from an anti-sub destroyer to a radar picket that he met his wife, Pearl in Boston.

After his active duty, Michael was a mechanical engineer in the private sector working on government defense projects for RCA and GTE Sylvania and others. His projects included everything from complex communications devices for the military to the highlight of his career as project engineer creating the Rendezvous Radar Antennae for Nasa’s Luner Excursion Module (LEM) for the Apollo Spacecraft Moon landing project.

Mr. Guba was very active with his kids in Boy Scouts and Little League as a scout leader and baseball coach. He loved the ocean and was an avid sailor and in fact built his own 28 foot craft. He and his wife were active in their church and he was also a member of the Masonic Lodge. Michael loved music, sang with a barbershop and in the church choir. His wife Pearl and he met dancing and could “cut” a mean rug and they were a joy to watch.

Michael participated in the activities and the atmosphere of retirement on Cape Cod and also helping his wife, Pearl, who was a manager at the John F. Kennedy museum in Hyannis, MA. They moved to Indiana, PA for health reasons to be closer to their younger son and daughter-in-law.

He is survived by two sons, Ronald L. Guba and wife Arlene of Sandwich, MA; Michael P. Guba III and wife Carol of Indiana, PA; two grandchildren, David Aucoin and wife Marybeth; and Ashley Guba; two great-granddaughters, Anslea and Carter Aucoin; and 2 nephews and a niece.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Pearl M. (Payson) Guba; one brother, James and one sister, Frances Reinhart.

Friends will be received on Tuesday, November 26, 2013 from 6 to 8 p.m. with his funeral service following at 8 p.m. at the Rairigh-Bence Funeral Home, Indiana. Interment will be made in the National Memorial Cemetery in Bourne, MA., at a later date.

Memorial contribution may be made to: Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Ave., 7th Fl., New York, NY 10001.
