Obituary for Robert G. Grumbling

Robert G. Grumbling, 86 of Heilwood, PA, died Tuesday, September 29, 2009, at UPMC Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA.



A son of Vallie D. and Olive M. (Giles) Grumbling, he was born on March 29, 1923, in Starford, Pennsylvania.



Mr. Grumbling was a lifelong member of the Heilwood Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder, choir member and took pride in tending to the church building and grounds.



Robert was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army in the European Theatre. He was a member of the Heilwood American Legion Post 936. He was a retired coal miner and member of the U.M.W.A. Local 1269.



Affectionately known as “Uncle Bob,” “Pappy” and “Sport” by his family, he was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle. He loved working in his woodshop, where he created hundreds of beautiful furniture pieces for family members and friends. He also enjoyed lawn work, fishing, auto racing and spending time with his family at their many outdoor picnics and birthday celebrations.



Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Eleanora (Celenza) Grumbling, whom he married on April 24, 1948, of Heilwood, PA; a son, Robert G. Grumbling of Heilwood, PA; a daughter, Traci A. Grumbling of Blairsville, PA; a granddaughter, Tara Grumbling of Heilwood; a sister, Helen L. Davis of Heilwood, PA; and the following nieces and nephews: Margo (Don) Inskeep of Bowie, MD; Jill (Bill) Eckenrode of Heilwood, PA; Todd (Sandi) Davis of Heilwood, PA; and numerous great nieces and great nephews.



He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Harold W. Grumbling.



Friends will be received at the Bence Funeral Home in Clymer from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 2. His funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at the Heilwood Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dan Little officiating. Interment will be made in the Church of the Resurrection cemetery at Camerons Bottom with military rites conducted by the Heilwood American Legion.
